The long-context capability genuinely works. We uploaded a 200-page technical specification document and asked detailed questions about specific sections, cross-references, and contradictions. Kimi accurately cited relevant passages and maintained context across the entire document — something that causes hallucinations in shorter-context models that must chunk and summarize.

Web search integration adds real-time information retrieval to Kimi's responses. You can ask about recent events or have it research current pricing for products mentioned in your uploaded documents. The search results are well-integrated into responses, though the citation format is less polished than Perplexity's purpose-built search experience.

Performance & Quality Analysis

For long-document tasks, Kimi is genuinely useful. Based on our research, accuracy remained high through documents up to 500 pages. Beyond that, response quality began to degrade — not from hallucination, but from increased latency and occasionally missing relevant passages in very large contexts. The sweet spot is 50-300 pages of material.

For general chatbot tasks (creative writing, casual conversation, quick questions), Kimi is adequate but not exceptional. Response quality trails ChatGPT and Claude on nuance, creativity, and instruction-following. The model is clearly optimized for long-context retrieval rather than general intelligence. User Experience & Interface

The interface is available in English and Chinese, with English being the secondary language — some UI elements and error messages occasionally appear in Chinese.

Where It Falls Short
